Theseremarks，Iknow，arecrudeandunwrought;butIdonotlayclaimtomuchaccuratethinking.Ineverjudgesystem-wiseofthings，butfastenuponparticulars.Afterall，thereisagreatdealinthebookthatImust，fortime，leaveunmentioned，todeservemythanksforitsownsake，aswellasforthefriendlyremembrancesimpliedinthegift.Iagainreturnyoumythanks.

[SoutheyslittlevolumewasVol.II.ofthesecondeditionofhisPoems，publishedin1799.ThelastoftheEnglishEcloguesincludedinitwas"TheRuinedCottage，"slightlyalteredfromtheversionreferredtoinletter38.The"HymntothePenates"broughtthefirstvolumeofthiseditiontoaclose.ThefirstEcloguewas"TheOldMansionHouse.""TheOldWomanofBerkeley"wascalled"ABalladshowinghowanOldWomanrodedoubleandwhorodebeforeher."Itwasprecededbyalong"ationinLatinfromMatthewofWestminster.MatthewofWestminsteristheimaginarynamegiventotheunknownauthorsofachroniclecalledFlaresHistoriarum，belongingprobablytothefifteenthcentury.TheParodywas"TheSurgeonsWarning，"whichbeginswiththetwolinesthatLambprintsasone:—
